The deployment of renewable energy depends on many issues external to standards, such as feed-in tariffs (FiTs), building regulations, planning, environmental factors and economic standing. However, standards have been used in combination with certification and other policies, regulations and drivers to open up or restrict access to markets.
Understanding standards and how they benefit all stakeholders is an important aspect of market development for renewable energy. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) published a valuable guide (PDF) in 2006 explaining benefits of standards, particularly in promoting and expanding trade.
